Packing a school lunch can sometimes be a challenge for many parents—how are you supposed to know what your child is going to want to eat in the middle of the day? And if they have braces, though, things can become even trickier. Crunchy chips, sticky candy, and hard foods all pose a threat to metal braces, even having the potential to cause treatment setbacks. The good news is that there are plenty of braces-friendly foods and snacks that are also kid-approved. Here are some ideas.

What Foods Should My Child Avoid with Braces?

While your child wears braces, it’s crucial that they avoid any foods that are excessively hard, crisp, or particularly tough. Even one bite into one of these foods is sometimes all it takes for them to snap a wire or pop off a bracket. This includes items like raw vegetables, croutons, tough rolls and breads, hard candies, popcorn, and even ice cubes.

Similarly, foods with small pieces like meat off the bone, muffins or breads with small seeds, potato and tortilla chips, or even granola bars can cause debris to become lodged in the braces, meaning they should be off limits. Even sticky and chewy foods and candies, like taffy, fudge, caramel, or chewing gum, can be problematic for children with braces.

What Are Some Good Lunch Options to Pack for My Child?

There are several types of items that make excellent lunch options for children with braces, and with so many choices, even the pickiest of eaters can be pleased! Many of these options also offer oral health benefits. Here are some ideas:

  • Soft sandwiches – Sandwiches made from deli meats like turkey and ham and soft cheeses are excellent ideas, as well as options like tuna salad, egg salad, or even PB&J, as long as you avoid chunky peanut butter. You can also cut the sandwiches into smaller pieces for easier biting.
  • Dairy options – Dairy products are high in calcium, which makes them beneficial for children with and without braces. However, items like yogurt, string cheese, and cottage cheese with fruit are also very gentle on braces and easy to eat.
  • Fresh produce – You must be careful here, since many raw fruits and veggies are tough to bite into directly. For items like apples, carrots, and cucumbers, make sure they’re thinly sliced. You can also provide items that are already soft and easy to eat, like bananas or steamed vegetables like broccoli, squash, and zucchini.
  • Plenty of protein – Kids never really seem to slow down, meaning they need foods that’ll fuel them throughout their day—just not at the expense of your braces. Thinly-sliced or finely-cut meats are fine, as are options like meatballs or chicken nuggets.

Braces don’t have to make school lunches boring or anxiety-inducing; with a little knowledge and planning, you can prepare healthy meals for them every single day that benefit their orthodontic journey!
